Much as though you could have a lawyer read it for you, accept that not many changes will be allowed, and hence aim to seek clarity of undertaking so that should you not be successful, they also are as careful with your information as they expect you to be with theirs.
Secondly, be prepared to undertake a lot of research quickly on the organisation. The selection format and interviews for executive jobs will vary from company to company and head hunter to executive search firm. But, the only consistency will be that you be you, engage with the board members who meet you, and to prove your ability to deliver. Both the former and particularly the later are improved and confirmed by your ability to research the organisation without reliance on their briefings, and see beyond the facts to show the potential the organisation could reach with you on board.

The way the mines are going you want 2 -3 years experience in a field in your civilian career. If you want a particular job in the mines its best to start now where you live and get some experience. It may be easier to find a job with a small sub contractor company that has work on a mine site. They may not pay as much as the big mining companies but they are more likely to hire a person in your situation and this way you get that valuable mining experience.
A lot of the time is who you know in the mining industry, if you met the right people and make a good connection with them. It's easy to find a job any field you like.
There are three job fields in the mining industry in Australia:
University educated mining jobs. Geologists, mine managers etc. Jobs that require university study as important part of the position.
Skilled Worked. Mechanics, wielders, Boiler makers, Drillers, Often requiring a trade or specific training.
Ticket required Jobs. Loader driving jobs, Truck driving, Road trains and dump trucks. Jobs often requiring tickets to show you're skilled in driving particular machinery or vehicles.
It sometimes turns into a cache 22 situation. The companies only want to hire experience people but how do you get that experience if they don't take new comers to the industry on. Wait! Are these sites safe?
The community policies itself through buyer and service provider feedback, similar to the system of Ebay. This makes Elance one of the more beginner-friendly auction site, as you can start aggressively bidding on projects paying zero to just minimal registration fees.
The site deducts some 6.75 to 8.75% (the rate depends on your lifetime earnings) of the money that you make, presumably for web hosting, customer support, escrow etc. As with most auction sites, service rates range from low ball to reasonable with the occasional high paying gigs --- so price your services accordingly.
Great site features: a chatroom for buyers and providers to unwind and socialize, as well as safety nets against unpaid work samples, academic projects and plagiarism.
Guru
Guru is as active as Elance, and offers roughly the same range of projects and benefits. Membership is also free and comes with 10 bidding units/ month. Guru, however, restricts bidding for non-paid memberships (making unpaid membership basically useless), so if you're interested in just "feeling around the site", you might not be able to get a gig.
The site also deducts some 5-10% from your project earnings (the rate depends on your kind of membership). Bank fees can also be deducted depending on buyer's credit card provider.
Guru offers a higher number of bidding units per subscription, almost three times that of Elance. Guru also asks for a flat rate of one bidding unit/ project, unlike Elance which asks for more connects for higher-paying gigs or featured project. The catch: the minimum subscription you can buy is a 3-month one ($75).
Guru's system both works for you and against you. On one hand, you get more bid units per month than what you can use, and thus you can bid on all the projects that catches your fancy --- with extra to spare. On the flipside, however, bidding in Guru is much more competitive compared to Elance. There can be more than 100 other service-providers gunning for the same project as you, while Elance's averages from 10-30 depending on the work.
Great features: option to unpublish negative feedback, ability to post multiple profiles for the same job category.
Freelancer (formerly GetAFreelancer)
Freelancer is another active service marketplace offering both free and paid (called Gold Membership) subscriptions. Compared to Elance and Guru, Freelancer just asks for a 3% commission from what you earn if you're a Gold Member ($19.95/month). Jobs in Freelancer (as well as in oDesk below), however, tend to pay lower rates relative to Elance and Guru--- and the competition is much more cutthroat.
A main difference Freelancer has over the first two sites discussed is the ability to work in several categories without having to pay extra. In Elance and Guru, you have to select just one category, say "Web Design" to work on. If you want to bid on other categories, that's an additional fee. Free membership in Freelancer, however, allows you to pick from 25 subcategories of work, while Gold memberships 50 subscategories. Therefore you can be a writer, a web designer and a virtual assistant with just one profile.
oDesk
Unlike Elance, Guru and Freelancer, oDesk doesn't have paid membership options; non-paying and paying members get the same benefits and privileges. This is great for people testing the waters, those who are interested in just the occasional freelance gig, or those who don't want to shell out on monthly memberships. The site does ask, however, for a flat 10% commission on all work done, a higher commission compared to Elance's 6.75-8.75% cut, Guru's 5-10% and Freelancer's 3 percent.
oDesk is another cutthroat bidding site (low-ball bids, lots of competition) --- but there are plenty of jobs to choose from if you don't have a high hourly rate.It's main selling feature: a unique interface that allows buyers to view at any time what you are working on and track hours spent on a task. This feature is a great idea for transparency --- buyers know exactly how much each of their paid time is being spent, and providers know how much exactly they should bill. But of you're the kind of worker who likes to browse random sites and answer IMs while you work, then the oDesk system might not be for you.
Hmm...Are online service marketplaces really for me?
You know what, you're the only one who can answer this question.
The benefit of service auction sites is the convenience of finding projects postings in just one place. The bane of auction sites is that it forces you to present your best offer to buyers --- and most of the time, this means lowering your rates or doing more than the usually do/ hourly rate. You compete with providers all over the world --- so if you're from a first world country, expect to have to compete with a third world provider who can do the same job for less.
Which is not to say that providers with above average rates don't thrive in these marketplaces. Targeted bidding, specialized services, awesome proposals and consistent work quality can get you a reliable above-par income in these sites. You may even function as a team manager, and source and outsource work instead providing direct services.

A Review on Corporate Career Development

Corporate Career Development Networking

As a natural part of my empowerment consulting practice, I often find myself in discussions with my clients about their jobs and careers. Sometimes we talk about new jobs or job opportunities; sometimes we talk about promotions; sometimes we talk about careers over the long-term.

These are all very different types of conversations. Most of my clients who are in corporations are mid-level to senior-level managers, who are competent and have already proven their value to the company. I also work with clients who are outside the corporate structure or are consultants to corporations, with whom career development conversations are different.

It is common for people to want to have a career development plan. Many think that those successful individuals who have preceded them in the corporation had a plan to get where they got. Some did, but quite honestly, it is easier for them to claim that they had a plan with the benefit of hindsight and success than to produce the plan they wrote years before.

There is a whole field of professionals who offer career development resources and consulting. I think their services can be extremely valuable, especially when moving from one company to another. I am more familiar with helping people to advance and develop careers within the same company, as an integral part of my consultations. And so, that is my focus in this article.

In these client conversations about career development within the same company, I usually fairly quickly replace the concept of a "career development plan" with a "career networking plan" or a "career development networking plan."

I’ve been working with a client who has been kicking and screaming about the idea of networking. She has been doing excellent work and feels she should be promoted based on her work. In one way, she’s absolutely correct. However, at her level in the organization, not only are there fewer openings, but a group of disparate persons with their own agendas usually decides about promotions and job changes.

When multiple persons with all different needs are involved in such a decision, there must be agreement that she is the one to promote or accept or move. Such a scenario usually requires more than doing the requisite job skills well. In most cases, the "more" comes down to ongoing activities she must be engaged in: networking and building authentic relationships.

I want to be clear, when I speak about career development networking, I do not mean to start networking to get a job that is now in the interview stage; my view is that this narrow type of networking is more appropriately called "lobbying." Instead, I am speaking about networking over the years — building relationships that are two-way, developing collaborative partnerships, feeling appreciation about interactions, expressing sincere congratulations when others are promoted, and engaging in conversations about a variety of topics.

When many individuals are all well-qualified for a job, something "more" must stand out in the final candidate. This "more" may be related to job accomplishments, but likely, the "more" is related to relationships — perhaps the one who is best known, or the one who is most liked, or the one who has consistently good interactions with others.

The candidate who is well-networked is likely to increase the chances that all the decision-makers will agree, "this is the one." There might sometimes be a thrill about a hotly contested position, but all things considered, the best transitions take place when there’s general agreement to select the final candidate.

Career Development Networking — a Starting Plan

First of all, it’s important that you think of networking as two-way! This is essential. The word "networking" has become rather polluted by the way some persons are using this word. Use the word however you want, but please understand that here I am using it to mean an exchange. Be pragmatic, of course, but understand that you are only "networked" if a two-way connection is happening. This is absolutely essential to understand, if you want to make this an empowering practice.

In my empowerment consulting sessions, I’m often coaching clients about the best persons to network with, the subjects to speak about, and how to speak about the subjects. Those who are a little shy or reticent about speaking with someone at much higher levels sometimes just need this added encouragement to take the step to network.

Many successful people already understand the need to network within their company. They probably don’t need a plan. Some jobs require that individuals know, interact, and partner with others in the company, and so they are usually well-networked naturally. If the company is large, though, there are many persons outside the scope of the current job who are potentials for expanding a network.

Here is a simple approach to getting started. Make two lists of persons in your company. The first is a list of the persons you already know and like. The second is a list of the persons you believe can, at some time, help you in your career — you may already know them or not. It is o.k. to have the same person on both lists; in fact, this strategy depends on that!

The intersecting subset of those two lists is the starting place. In other words, start your networking plan with the persons you like, whom you think can help you in your career. You will have more success by starting where it is easiest. Keep your lists updated over time, so that this is an organic process.

The next step is to decide, person by person, how and how often to network. Again, start where it is easiest. If you have regular meetings with someone on your target list, sit near the person, or suggest that you have lunch afterward, or take an interesting article to give to the person. If you consider you are already actively networking with this person, you may not need to adjust any actions. Just be certain to keep the person on your radar screen.

For best results, keep a journal of your networking. In your journal or on your calendar, make a notation for yourself for your next contact. By all means, do not over-commit yourself to starting to build too many new relationships at the same time. As a relationship is in the stage where either you and the other person are at ease to "call anytime," you have built a relationship, so continuing it is easier.
